Stimulus Sets

Example public stimulus set: Natural Scenes Dataset

Part of the stimulus set page for the Natural Scenes Dataset, full 73.000 images version. This is one of the public stimulus sets that are available to all users.

Stimuli on Meadows are organized into sets. A set can contain a mix of visual, auditory and lexical stimuli. When designing tasks in an experiment, a task that presents stimuli always has a single Stimulus Set associated with it. You can reuse a set across experiments. This page describes existing public stimulus sets that are available to you, as well as how to make your own set and potentially share it with colleagues.

Individual media files

The simplest method to add a few images, audio or video files, is to drag them onto the top area of the Media tab. This works with jpg, png, ogv, mp4, mp3, wav and flac files. After the file has uploaded, you'll see a preview, and a button to remove it again. After you make changes by uploading, press the Save Changes button right below it. At most 100 stimuli are displayed on the page. You can also remove all stimuli with the button next to it. Once you are happy with the stimulus set, click the green Finalize button to lock editing of the set and make it available in experiments. This method is recommended for up to about a 100 files. To add more files we recommend using a zip file.

Zip file

Rather than uploading a handful of files, you can also compress a folder on your computer that contains media files into a zip file, and upload this zip file. This allows uploading up to 40.000 files per zip file. You can do this multiple times, if you have files with subsets.

Text stimuli

On the text tab, you can add character strings for your participants to read, either one by one or from a table file (.csv or .tsv). Read more on the page for text stimuli.

Feature stimuli

A third category of stimuli are those that were extracted from another stimulus set with a feature decomposition algorithm. This can be done by using the preprocess feature. These stimuli can only be used in the Diagnostic Feature Mapping task. As this is a relatively new feature in beta testing, please contact us if you're interested in using it.

Sharing stimulus sets

If you'd like to share your set with the public, or with another Meadows account holder, please let us know and we can arrange this.
